Ne aggódj, teljesen normális – szinte minden nyelvtanulóval megesik. A jó hír, hogy a nyelvi gátlás nem a képességeidről szól, hanem egy szokásról, amit szépen, lépésről lépésre le tudsz építeni. Összeszedtem neked öt tippet, amit a tanítványaimmal […]

Does this sound familiar? You have already put the sentence together in your head and you know the words, but when it is time to speak, you still get stuck. Don’t worry, it is completely normal – it happens to almost every language learner. The good news is that this fear of speaking is not about your abilities, but about a habit you can gradually overcome, step by step. I have put together five tips that I also use with my students in practice.

1. Let go of your fear of making mistakes

Most inhibitions stem from a single thought: “What if I make a mistake?” But making mistakes is not failure; it is the most natural part of learning. Think about it: when you were learning to speak Hungarian, no one expected perfect sentences from you. You simply gave it a try, and improved along the way. Learning a foreign language works in exactly the same way. Your conversation partner is rarely focused on your grammar; they are much more likely to be pleased that they understand what you are trying to say.

2. Start small, but be consistent

You do not need to start with an hour-long conversation straight away. Just a few minutes a day is enough, as long as you practise regularly. Say out loud what you did that day, name the objects around you, or express a simple opinion about a film. The key is to help your mouth get used to producing unfamiliar sounds. Consistency is far more valuable than occasional, intensive practice sessions—confidence grows from small, repeated successes.

3. Practise even when you have no one to practise with

Many people think you absolutely need a partner to practise speaking. In fact, you can improve a great deal on your own as well. Talk to yourself out loud, read a short text aloud, or listen to a dialogue and repeat the sentences. Recording yourself on your phone is also an excellent method: it may feel strange at first, but when you listen back, you can clearly hear what you need to improve. This kind of independent practice will make you feel more confident when it is time to speak in a real-life situation.

4. Don’t translate in your head—think in the language

One common reason for hesitation is that you first formulate every sentence in Hungarian and then translate it in your head. This is slow and disrupts the natural flow of speech. Try to think in simpler structures directly in the language you are learning. When you cannot remember a word, describe it using other words—this is one of the most important skills in real-life conversations. It does not matter if your first attempt is not perfectly phrased; fluency will develop naturally over time.

5. Create a safe space for practice

It is much easier to overcome your hesitation when you practise in a situation where you feel comfortable making mistakes. In a patient, supportive environment—where no one corrects you after every half-sentence but encourages you instead—you will soon begin to feel more at ease. This is also what I aim to create in my lessons: you can confidently give it a try, say an unfinished sentence, and we will shape it into a complete one together. Feeling safe is what helps release tension most quickly.

Confidence comes with practice

Remember: fluent, confident speech is not a matter of talent, but of habit. The more often you allow yourself to speak—even with mistakes—the more natural it will become. Be patient with yourself, celebrate the small successes, and enjoy the process.

If you would like to experience what it is like to practise in a calm, encouraging environment, visit the Contact page and sign up for a free level assessment. Together, we will find out where you are now and how you can move forward—without hesitation.

The post Öt tipp, ha elakadsz a megszólalásnál: így oldd a nyelvi gátlást appeared first on Németh Ági.
